Ngong Ping, Lantau
Located at the foot of Lantau Peak, Wisdom Path is a landscaped installation of wooden columns inscribed with the calligraphy of the complete verses of the Heart Sutra written by master Sinologist Professor Jao Tsung-I.
Known as Sāhasrikā-prajñā-pāramitā in Sanskrit, the full name of the Heart Sutra symbolises wisdom and completeness in its original language. The verses inscribed are the Chinese version translated by Xuanzang of Tang dynasty, which is revered in Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. The 38 giant wood columns, which measure 8-10 metres tall and 1 metre wide, are arranged in a "∞" pattern following the natural terrain of the site to signify infinity. The tallest column, marked no. 23, is intentionally left blank to convey the "emptiness” concept highlighted in the Heart Sutra. According to Professor Jao, to have no hindrance in one’s mind is an essence of the verses.
