See with your Mind’s Eye: The Blindfold Cable Car Experience
On 23 September, NP360 successfully held Hong Kong’s first-ever cable car fundraising event, the 360 Sharing Ambassador – Blindfold Cable Car Experience. The event’s inception was inspired by a visually impaired guest who purchased an annual pass. While this guest was unable to see the scenery, he could still experience the natural environment with his other four senses. Two years in the making, the event was a great success with more than 800 participants, raising more than HK$380,000 for Orbis in support of its sight-saving work.
Jason Pak-ho Chan, a visually impaired student who achieved 35 marks in the HKDSE, was invited as the special guest to share his feelings about the event. He was impressed by the audio tour guide who described the surrounding mist and scenery so well that Pak-ho could imagine himself in the clouds.
After receiving specialised training from veteran DJ Candy Chea, approximately 70 students from 7 Lantau secondary schools acted as audio tour guides, bringing the beautiful scenery to life for Pak-ho and the blindfolded participants. Angel Sum-yu Yeung from the YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College was chosen by principals and participants as the Best Audio Tour Guide. She won an overseas sight-saving trip with Orbis.
Dr Stella Kwan, convenor of the 360 Sharing Ambassador and Managing Director of Ngong Ping 360 said that “the event today allowed participants to enjoy the natural landscape of Lantau with all senses except sight and become more eye-care aware. This is a very meaningful initiative, giving back to society”.
Ms Vicky Lau, organiser of the 360 Sharing Ambassador and Head of Corporate Affairs commented that “Blindfold Cable car Experience allows us to closely connect with society. By involving the general public, our colleagues, the Lantau community, corporations and stakeholders to join the first fundraising event organised by Ngong Ping 360, we can jointly give back to society and support Orbis’ global sight-saving work”.
