Water wedding is an age-old custom of the Tanka people. A traditional water wedding lasts for three days and three nights. Today, the tradition has gradually vanishing. To keep the custom alive, Tai O Rural Committee has been running an annual programme to showcase the traditional wedding of the fishing village since 2000. At the wedding, instrument players would perform wedding music and sing traditional fishermen’s ballads. The newly-weds would sit in a wooden sampan decorated with the double-happiness theme to receive blessings from their guests.
