Carrying an average of 3.4 million passengers every weekday, the MTR is regarded as one of the world's leading railways for safety, reliability, customer service and cost efficiency.
Established in 1975, MTR Corporation is the owner of the Ngong Ping 360 - a Hong Kong tourist attraction incorporating the Tung Chung Cable Car. In 2002, the HKSAR Government granted the service concession of the project in the form of "Build-Operate-Transfer" to MTR Corporation, which would develop, invest in and manage the attraction that marks a new milestone in the Hong Kong tourist industry and further enhances Hong Kong's position as the Asia World City.
The Corporation marked another major milestone on 2 December 2007 when the operations of the other Government-owned rail operator, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, were merged into the MTR, heralding a new era in the Hong Kong railway development.
MTR Corporation's principle business is to operate the mass transit railway system. Besides railway operations, the Corporation is also actively involved in the development of key residential and commercial projects above existing stations and along new line extensions as well as many other commercial activities associated with the railway including rental of retail and poster advertising space, ATM banking facilities and personal telecommunication services, all of which help to build new communities. It also provides consultancy services to organizations worldwide.
